Rays designate Juan Carlos Oviedo for assignment
ST. PETERSBURG - The Rays designated RHP Juan Carlos Oviedo for assignment before Saturday’s game against the Red Sox.
The roster move was necessary to create an opening for RHP Jeremy Hellickson (0-0, 2.08), who will start tonight.
Oviedo, 32, had a 3.69 ERA this season in 32 appearances. He had given up six runs over his last 3 2/3 innings and had surrendered at least one run in eight of his last 16 outings. Oviedo had allowed 27 hits while walking 17 batters in 31 2/3 innings.
He missed all of last season while he recovered from Tommy John surgery in September 2012.
"It was not an easy choice, actually," manager Joe Maddon said before the game. "But one thing we do have is bullpen arms, whether it's here or in the minor leagues. Just looking at the whole thing and trying to evaluate what you have and what you look like going forward, it was him."
