Rays get Steven Souza Jr. back but lose Steve Pearce

The Rays got OF Steven Souza Jr. back in their lineup for the first time this spring, but lost INF/OF Steve Pearce for what sounds like at least a couple days.

Souza  struck out twice and flied out and bounced a throw woefully off target, but actually was quite pleased with his first game of the spring after recovering from a Feb. 21 intercostal strain.

"It was awesome,'' he said. "Just being able to compete like that was fun. I was a little excited, as you could tell, to be on the field. I just wanted to get in there, swing, and test it out in a high-adrenaline environment. So I'm really happy with how everything turned out."

Pearce, slated to play 1B, was scratched from the lineup due to right calf tightness. Manager Kevin Cash said they were "not overly concerned" but will "play it smart" for the next few days.

Also, 1B James Loney was sent home for the day after reporting with flu-like symptoms.
