Rays lose to Sox 9-2; Rodriguez, Aceves have a moment
The Rays lost to the Boston Red Sox 9-2 on Saturday.
Rays starter Roberto Hernandez navigated a tough first inning and then settled down for a decent five-inning outing.
Tempers flared in the fifth when Boston's Alfredo Aceves hit Sean Rodriguez with a pitch then barked at him when Rodriguez got to first. Rodriguez wouldn't reveal what Aceves, a known troublemaker, said, but was close to charging at him and was restraind by 1B coach Dave Myers. Rodriguez had homered earlier off Aceves.
Aceves said afterward the pitch just got away from him; Rodriguez said he couldn't determine intent.
The game was close until the ninth when reliever Dane De La Rosa allowed four runs.
The Rays (13-8) and Sox meet again Sunday in Fort Myers with Alex cobb on the mound. Manager Joe Maddon said he didn't consider Saturday an escalation of past issues between the teams.
