Rays may be targets in today's Rule 5 draft
There is considerable discussion here in Nashville today that Rays OF Tyler Goeddel will be the top pick in this morning's Rule 5 draft.
The Phillies have the first pick, but there is talk they may trade it for cash considerations.
Goeddel is one of the minor-leaguers the Rays considered but decided to not add to the 40-man roster last week which would have protected him from being selected.
Goeddel, 23, is a 2011 supplemental first-round pick who hit .279 with 12 homers, 72 RBIs and a .783 on-base plus slugging percentage at Double-A Montgomery, his first season above Class A.
OF Joey Rickard, a 24-year-old who made it to Triple-A last season is also among the candidates to be taken.
The players the Rays chose to protect instead were LHP Blake Snell, INF/OF Taylor Motter and RHPs Jacob Faria, Taylor Guerrieri and German Marquez.
Players taken in the major-league portion of the draft must be kept in the majors all season or offered back to their team for half the $50,000 claiming fee.
