The Rays decided to pick up their $6.5-million option on OF David DeJesus and are in talks on a multiyear deal that could be finished soon.

DeJesus, 33, was acquired Aug. 23 from the Nationals and hit .260 with a .328 on-base percentage in 35 games for the Rays, highlights including the walkoff single in the Sept. 20 18-inning win over Baltimore and the first playoff appearance of his 11-year career.

The Nationals claimed him from the Cubs four days earlier. The Rays gave up lefty pitcher Matthew Spann, a 22-year-old who was at Class A.

Here is the team release:

ST. PETERSBURG, FL-The Tampa Bay Rays have exercised their 2014 club option on outfielder David DeJesus.

DeJesus, who turns 34 in December, was acquired by the Rays on August 23 from the Washington Nationals.  After joining the Rays, the left-handed hitter played in 35 of the Rays 38 games and started 26 contests (18-LF, 5-CF, 3-RF), all against right-handed pitchers.  In a combined 122 games between the Chicago Cubs, Nationals and Rays in 2013, DeJesus batted .251/.327/.402 (98-for-391) with eight home runs, 38 RBI, 29 doubles and 52 runs scored.  Against right-handed pitchers, he batted .266/.345/.427 (89-for-335) with seven home runs, 34 RBI, 27 doubles and three triples.

A veteran of 11 major league seasons, DeJesus enjoyed his first trip to the postseason as the Rays captured the 2013 American League Wild Card.  He batted .341 (15-for-44) at Tropicana Field after joining the Rays.  On September 20 vs. the Baltimore Orioles, he delivered a walk-off single in the 18th inning for a 5-4 win, ending the longest game in club history.  DeJesus is a career .279 hitter with a .353 on-base percentage, 88 home runs and 61 triples and owns a career .289 batting average against right-handed pitchers.

The Rays also hold a club option on right-handed relief pitcher Juan Carlos Oviedo and must make a decision by midnight tomorrow, November 4.
