Rays place Jennings on DL again, activate Mahtook
OF Desmond Jennings was placed on the DL yet again on Saturday, this time due to a left knee contusion as a result of fouling a ball off his knee Tuesday.
OF Mikie Mahtook, out since breaking his left hand in June, was activated.
Manager Kevin Cash said Jennings has "a pretty good bone bruise" and that it was unclear when or if Jennings would return this season. Jennings declined to talk with reporters.
"Desmond is frustrated,'' Cash said. "He came in, we talked. He felt really good coming back from the DL (on Monday, following a hamstring strain). He fouls a ball off the knee, and I think he's in a very similar feeling that he was before his surgery last year. We went and got all kinds of tests on him, it does show up that there's a pretty heavy bone bruise in there.
"So we're just going to have to wait and see. He'll probably take a couple days of just getting treatment and doing the rehab. Depending on how he goes about it, we'll see how to amp him up or not and test it out.''
In the 65 games Jennings has played this season, he hit .200 with 7 homers, 20 RBIs and a .631 OPS. He played only 28 games last season due to a series of injuries, and sat out the final month of the 2014 season.
Mahtook was supposed to play one more rehab game with the Stone Crabs on Saturday but the Rays decided to bring him back tonight and shelve Jennings.
Also, SS Matt Duffy said his initial rehab went well and the plan is play three more games for Durham, then rejoin the Rays in New York on Thursday for the weekend series against the Yankees.
And though LHP Enny Romero's tight back was feeling better, Cash said the Rays decided they couldn't wait and needed extra coverage in the bullpen since they are trying to let Erasmo Ramirez build up innings, which is why RHP Danny Farquhar was recalled.
