Rays reach out, make some new fans at Havana stadium
The dozen Rays players who went to Estadio Latinoamericano left with some new friends and some new fans.
And none bigger than Diego Lopez, a 9-year-old boy tagging along with his dad, a volunteer worker at the stadium.
As the Rays were getting ready to start the optional workout, Lopez found himself on the field, getting a gift bag of Rays items - including a T-shirt he immediately pulled on - presented by C Rene Rivera and a couple of baseballs from manager Kevin Cash.
His day got better when Rays RHP Chris Archer came over and started playing catch with him, and then gave him a few tips and another ball that Lopez asked him to sign.
The Rays reached out to others, including a stadium tarp volunteer named Irving Negrin, who was wearing a University of Tampa t-shirt he got a couple years ago.
