Rays Romero sustains only bruised hand after deflecting line drive
Rays LHP Enny Romero came through a scary incident in the eighth inning of Saturday's matinee with just a bruised left hand.
A line drive off the bat of Manny Machado was headed right at Romero's head but he got his bare hand up just in time to deflect it.
"I just saw the ball coming to my face and the only way was to put up my hand to my face,'' Romero said. "If it hit my face it would take a long time to come back to pitch.''
Though Romero looked to be in considerable pain at the time, x-rays were negative and he said the only issues were inflammation. He expects to be able to pitch on Sunday.
"He's lucky he got his hand up,'' 3B Evan Longoria said. "It would have been really bad. I think we escaped a serious, serious injury.''
