Rays set ALDS roster: Hellickson on, Kiermaier out
The Rays set their roster for the AL Division Series, adding David Price and potential Game 4 starter Jeremy Hellickson (over Jake Odorizzi) and dropping third catcher Chris Gimenez and defensive OF/pinch-runner Kevin Kiermaier. They also kept LH Wesley Wright over RH Brandon Gomes for the final bullpen spot. The Rays will carry 11 pitchers and 14 position players.
Here is the breakdown:
Pitchers (11): Matt Moore, David Price, Alex Cobb, Jeremy Hellickson, Chris Archer, Fernando Rodney, Joel Peralta, Jake McGee, Alex Torres, Jamey Wright, Wesley Wright
Catchers (2): Jose Lobaton, Jose Molina
Infielders (6): James Loney, Ben Zobrist, Yunel Esocobar, Evan Longoria, Kelly Johnson, Sean Rodriguez
Outfielders (6): David DeJesus, Desmond Jennings, Sam Fuld, Matt Joyce, Delmon Young, Wil Myers
Hellickson would apper to be the choice for the Game 4 start, with Archer available in the bullpen. But it's possible if Archer isn't used in relief that he could be the choice. Dropping Gimenez is not a surprise as the third catcher is a luxury. Not having Kiermaier either means Jennings' hamstring is feeling better or the Rays are comfortable with Fuld and DeJesus as potential backups.
Luke Scott is not on the roster, as he wasn't for the wild-card game either. That means Delmon Young remains the primary DH and that Joyce and Johnson are seen as better pinch-hit options.
The Red Sox submitted this roster:
Pitchers (11): Breslow, Buchholz, Dempster, Doubront, Peavy, Lackey, Lester, Morales, Tazawa, Uehara, Workman.
Catchers (2): Ross, Saltalamacchia
Infielders (6): Bogaerts, Drew, Middlebrooks, Napoli, Ortiz, Pedroia
Outfielders (6): Berry, Carp, Ellsbury, Gomes, Nava, Victorino.
