The Rays have signed 1st-round draft pick Casey Gillaspie.

The first baseman from Wichita State was taken 20th overall in last week's draft.

"I wanted to come here and sign early so I can get going and start my career as a professional baseball player," Gillaspie said at Tropicana Field before tonight's game.

The deal is for the slot value of $2,035,500.

"This is not the endgame for him, being a first-round pick..." scouting director R.J. Harrison said. "He wants to be a big leaguer."

Gillaspie said he will leave tomorrow for Hudson Valley, N.Y. to join the Rays' Class A short season team, which opens play Friday. He likely will need at least a week before playing in games.
