Rays sign Ryan Webb to 1-year deal, put Whitley on 60-day DL
The Rays today made official the signing of RHP Ryan Webb to a 1-year deal, for $1-million plus incentives.
Webb is a Clearwater native and product of Clearwater Central Catholic High.
RHP Chase Whitley was moved to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for Webb.
Webb, 30, spent most of last season with the Indians, going 1-0 with a 3.20 ERA in 40 games after spending much of April in the minors. Primarily a ground ball pitcher, His 3.65 groundball-to-flyball ratio was fifth highest among American League relievers.
The right-hander has previously been with the Padres, Marlins and Orioles, compiling a 3.35 ERA in 357 big-league games.
Whitley, claimed on waivers from the Yankees, is recovering from Tommy John surgery and expected to return in late July or early August.
Webb was a fourth-round pick by the A's in 2004 out of CCC, where he was part of their 2002 state championship team and threw a 2003 no-hitter. As a senior, he was 10-0, 0.42.
