Rays Silverman on Archer comments: We share his passion

Rays baseball operations president Matt Silverman put a positive spin on comments from top starter Chris Archer about the team needing to spend more money to win and for team officials to stop dwelling on the disadvantages they face in competiing against large-market clubs.

"We all share that drive to win,'' Silverman said Friday. "We share Chris' passion. There's no value in harping on the competitve disadvantages in baseball. It's our reality. And it's what helps motivate us to find new ways to win.''

Silverman declined to specifically address Archer's suggestion that the raise their payroll beyond the projected $70-million or so to add veteran players.

Here is my column from today's Times on Archer's comments.
