Rays still talking trade, presumably for a bat; Roberts a potential call-up
With a 4 p.m. deadline Wednesday for nonwaiver trades, two things were clear late Tuesday.
One, the Rays were still working on at least one potential deal, presumably to add a hitter. There were no hints as to which hitters they were considering, though Raul Ibanez and Justin Morneau are among those considered available. For what it's worth, one source said the deal under discussion would be pretty big by Rays standards.
Two, they pulled INF Ryan Roberts from Triple-A Durham's game because he may be called up Wednesday.
What was unclear was how connected those moves may be, whether Roberts would be replacing a traded player (Matt Joyce? Sean Rodriguez? Kelly Johnson?) or whether there could be an injury issue or a series of roster moves.
RHP Jesse Crain, who was acquired Monday from the White Sox and will wear No. 26, is expected at the Trop today, where he will meet with the medical staff to map out his rehab program.
