UPDATE, 10:27: In that new deal, #Rays Forsythe gets a $2.5-million signing bonus and $1-million salary in 2016, a $5,75-million salary in 2017 and either an $8.5-million salary or a $1-million buyout for 2018.
DEVELOPING: The Rays have considerable work to do this morning in negotiating with their five remaining arbitration eligible players in advance of MLB's 1 p.m. deadline to exchange figures.
That after a busy Thursday in which they put in place a two-year $10.25-million deal in place with INF Logan Forsythe and settled with four others, including reliever Jake McGee, who got a $4.8-million salary for 2016.
The five players they still talking with are C Hank Conger, DH/1B Logan Morrison, RHP Erasmo Ramirez, C Rene Rivera and LHP Drew Smyly. Conger and Morrison are newcomers, Riveria is coming off a rough first season with the Rays, Ramirez and Smyly could pose interesting cases.
If there is no deal by the 1 p.m. deadline, the Rays have a longstanding policy of cutting off talks and proceeding to a hearing, which tends to force the action as neither side likes to get that far. They are 6-0 in those hearings during their first 18 seasons.
The four players agreeing to deals on Thursday were McGee, RHP Alex Cobb ($4M), OF Desmond Jennings ($3.3M), and OF Brandon Guyer ($1,185M).
