Rays talks with Cubs on Baez seem to have slowed
The Rays talks wiith the Cubs to acquire INF Javier Baez appear to have slowed on what thus far has been a quiet Tuesday at the winter meetings.
The Rays have made it clear they want Baez in a bid to add a young, affordable, controllable hitter to their lineup and have pitching depth to deal from. The Cubs have interest in RHP Alex Cobb, who will be sidelined into August as he rehabs from Tommy John elbow surgery.
But the Cubs want more than just Cobb, which has apparently led to the talks slowing as the Rays then would another piece as well. That may lead both teams to explore other options.
The Rays have other pitchers they could otherwise deal - starters Matt Moore, Jake Odorizzi or Drew Smyly - and relievers Brad Boxberger or Jake McGee.
Current Cubs, and former Rays, manager Joe Maddon said during his media room session there were conversations ongoing with the Rays, but alko with other teams. The Rays are likely talking to other teams as well.
CF Kevin Kiermaier stopped in at the meetings to pick up his Esurance award as the game's top defensive player.
Ex-Rays INF/OF Ben Zobrist was said to nearing a decision, with the Mets, Giants and Nats considered his top choices.
Former Devil Ray Greg Norton was on site seeking a minor-league coaching job with any team.
