Rays to give struggling Smyly mental, physical break by skipping start
The Rays are giving struggling LHP Drew Smyly what manager Kevin Cash said was a mental and physical break by skipping his next start.
Rather than face the Astros this weekend, Smyly (2-7, 4.94) will not pitch again until June 15 at the earliest.
The Rays this weekend will start RHP Matt Andriese, RHP Chris Archer and LHP Matt Moore against Houston. They are off on Monday, and plan on opening a series against the Mariners on Tuesday with RHP Jake Odorizzi and then Smyly.
Smyly has had ongoing issues with his off-speed pitches, but Cash said they are confident he is not having any issues with his shoulder, based on his consistent fastball.
