The Rays will open the season with a four-man rotation and shift Erasmo Ramirez to the bullpen.

With abundant April off-days, the Rays can rely heavily on their top four starters of Chris Archer, Drew Smyly, Jake Odorizzi and Matt Moore.

They conceivably will need a fifth starter only twice in the first five weeks of the season, April 13 and 23.

Manager Kevin Cash said Ramirez will go to the bullpen for that time, and will be used to get "big outs" given the void created by the injury absence of closer Brad Boxberger.

Most likely, the Rays will call up a starter when needed during that time.
