Roberts recalled; Loney on paternity list; Escobar uncertain
INF Ryan Roberts was recalled and will join the Rays on Friday to take the place of 1B James Loney, who was placed on the three-day paternity list.
Roberts was a late scratch from Triple-A Durham's lineup on Thursday. Loney was not on the team's Thursday evening flight to Toronto; his wife is expected to have labor induced.
Having Roberts on hand also provides some middle infield depth for the Rays due to the uncertain status of SS Yunel Escobar, who left Sunday's game with a slight right hamstring strain.
Escobar spent much of Thursday's workout at Tropicana Field in the trainer's room, and it's not clear when he will return to the lineup. If he isn't improved enough to play be the time Loney returns the Rays could consider placing him on the DL.
Ben Zobrist would seem most likely to start in Escobar's place, with Roberts and/or Kelly Johnson at second. Sean Rodriguez or Luke Scott would likely take Loney's place.
Asked about Escobar on Thursday, Rays manager Joe Maddon said: "He was upstairs getting treatment. He said he felt pretty good. So I need to see him out here though to find out how good.''
