Sale among minor leaguers invited to development camp

9

January

Former Rays first-round pick OF Josh Sale is one of 27 minor leaguers invited to next week's development camp at Tropicana Field, a good sign that his team-mandated suspension is over.

Sale was suspended by the Rays in May for conduct detrimental to the organization. He was disciplined after making a derogatory post on his Facebook page about a strip club visit, with the post getting picked up by the web site Deadspin.com, among others.

"Threw 50 cents at a stripper tonight. First time. Got kicked out and she got so (mad) thought she was gonna cry. Your a stripper. Be thankful."

Sale, a first-round pick in 2010, was sent back home to Washington during the suspension. Director of minor league operations Mitch Lukevics said late last season that Sale handled the discipline as well as he could, and that the Rays wanted him back at some point.

The fact Sale has been brought back to the camp, which will also include fellow first-round picks C Nick Ciuffo (2013) and 3B/1B Richie Shaffer (2012), could mean the Rays are ready for him to return to baseball activities.

Sale last played in 2012 for Class-A Bowling Green, hitting .264 with 10 homers and 44 RBI. He had to serve a 50-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug, and hadn't been activated at Class A Charlotte at the time of his suspension.

Here's the full list of Rays minor leaguers set to attend next week's development camp, which goes from Monday through Thursday at Tropicana Field. The players will receive instruction, media training, and make community appearances throughout the week.
