The Rays had an abbreviated workout on the first day of live batting practice as players and staff headed up to the Trop for the Fan Fest.

LHP David Price was among the pitchers throwing, noting "I kinda surprised myself how I good I felt.''

RHP Grant Balfour was not happy with his session, saying he felt he was "nails" in the bullpen but like a different person when he took the mound. Of note, Balfour declined to have the L-shaped screen in front of him that most pitchers use, saying he felt it made him cut off his pitches.

Among pitchers manager Joe Maddon watched and noted were RHP Heath Bell (who also has impressed Maddon with his professionalism and overall work), LHP Erik Bedard, new acquisition RHP Nate Karns, LHP Jake McGee ("lightning bolts"), and LH reliever hopefuls Jeff Believeau and C.J. Riefenhauser.

Maddon also spoke of his eagerness to hear the details of the new replay system, and potentially the new catcher collision rules, in a Sunday afternoon meeting with MLB officials.
