The Rays were certainly interested observers to the free-agent courtship of former ace David Price, who ended up signing with the Red Sox for a record $217-million - at least $70-million more than has been spent total to bring free agents to the Trop in the post-Devil Rays era.
"I did ask (agent) Bo McKinnis if we could get him on layaway,'' Rays baseball operations president Matt Silverman joked. "That wasn't an option. So I think we were out of the running pretty early.''
