To start, Hernandez a starter

When the Rays signed free-agent Roberto Hernandez in December, they talked about the possibility of movin him to the bullpen, eyeing his ability to get a lot of ground balls as an enticing weapon.

But for now, Hernandez, the former Fausto Carmona, will be used as a starter, in theory competing with Jeff Niemann fo rthe final rotation spot.
"We will treat him as a starter right now,'' manager Joe Maddon said. "If we chose to do something else, like with all the different candidates, then we would just do that later in camp.''

Hernandez hasn't worked in relief since his 2006 rookie season and said he considers himself a starter but will do what is asked.
