Top prospect Guerrieri has elbow surgery
UPDATE, 8:31: The Rays officially announced that Guerrieri underwent successful surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament by Dr. James Andrews.
DEVELOPING: Rays top pitching prospect Taylor Guerrieri underwent Tommy John elbow surgery today and is expected to be out at least a year.
Guerrieri had been pitching, and well, at Class A Bowling Green. He was given two weeks off due to what the team said was fatigue, then returned July 15 but left after two innings due to discomfort in his elbow. He was 6-2, 2.01 in four starts.
He went to see Dr. James Andrews this morning in Pensacola, and the decision was made to do the surgery this afternoon.
The Rays would hope to get Guerrieri far enough along in his rehab to pitch in a game sometime late in the 2014 minor-league season or during the instructional league, but for all intents and purposes he is out until 2015.
Guerrieri was the Rays top pick in the 2011 draft, the 24th pick overall, and the top-rated prospect remaining in their system.
Also, Rays INF prospect Tim Beckham has been placed on the temporary inactive list at Durham. All the team says is that he had to go home for "personal reasons."
