Twenty-foot python visits Rays' clubhouse

UPDATE, 5:35: Several players, such as Fernando Rodney and Luke Scott, were eager to get up close with the snake a reticulated python; others such as Desmond Jennings and David Price wanted no part of it. Maddon said he enjoyed the reaction of the players as much as anything. ... The snake weighs 115 pounds, and eats once every two weeks according to the handlers from Busch Gardens ...  Maddon said the snake rivaled the penguins for best impact in the clubhouse.

DEVELOPING: Manager Joe Maddon had a 20-foot python brought into the Rays' clubhouse before tonight's game against the Mariners in his latest team-building activity.

The snake, named Asia, was from Busch Gardens.

"A snake is a risk taker and a wellspring of ideas,'' Maddon tweeted. "They fit into the Rays Way. Asia was a big hit today.''

Maddon said he had been considering bringing in a snake for awhile and decided the timing was right following a rough road trip.

Earlier this season, he had a cockatoo, a DJ, a magician and a merengue band visit the clubhouse.
