Updates on Alex Cobb, Steven Souza Jr. Brad Boxberger, Chase Whitley
Lots of news today on the Rays injury front …
RHP Alex Cobb (Tommy John) threw 35 pitches in two innings during live BP, pitching to RF Steven Souza Jr. (hip) and INF Nick Franklin.
Cobb said it went well.
He threw 20 pitches during the first inning, rested, returned to the mound and threw 15 more. The long, 20-pitch first inning was exactly what he needed, he said, because it enabled him to pitch through some fatigue.
Cobb will throw a bullpen Sunday. He might throw another round of live BP or he might begin his minor league rehab assignment next week.
RHP Chase Whitley (Tommy John) threw 25 pitches during his live BP session. He is about a week behind Cobb in his rehab program.
Souza, who homered off Cobb and Whitley, is scheduled to begin his minor league rehab Friday at Class A Charlotte.
“I feel great,” Souza said. “Just a big indication that I can really explode with my lower half.”
Souza said he doesn’t feel he will need many games to get his timing back. But he said he does need to play defense so he can see how his hip responds to starting and stopping and cutting as he fields balls hit down the line and to the gap.
RHP Brad Boxberger (oblique) threw 15 pitches in his first bullpen since he suffered the injury.
“Everything was feeling well,” Boxberger said. “I’ll progress from there.”
RHP Alex Colome (right medial biceps tendinitis) played catch at 90 feet.
