UPDATE: Veteran LHP Erik Bedard signed to minor-league deal

UPDATE, 8:52: The deal is now official, and Bedard is expected in Rays camp today. The roster is now at 64.

DEVELOPING: The Rays are likely to sign veteran LHP Erik Bedard to a minor-league deal with an invite to camp.

Bedard is 34, a veteran of 10 big-league seasons, though without much success lately.

He was 7-14, 5.01 in 2012 for the Pirates, then 4-12, 4.50 for the Astros last year. That came after a 5-9, 3.62 2011 season split between Seattle and Boston. Overall, Bedard has not had a winning record since 2009.

But with RHP Jeremy Hellickson sidelined into at least mid-May following Jan. 29 elbow surgery, and only young and inexperienced candidates to replace him, the Rays are seeking to build depth among their starters.
