Rays lefthander David Price felt "great" during a 54-pitch simulated game Thursday, with manager Joe Maddon saying he's "exceeding expecations" on his recovery from a left triceps strain.

Maddon said Price, out since mid-May, may need less than the planned three minor league rehab starts before returning.

"He looked he could pitch in an actual game today, he was that good," Maddon said. "Velocity on fastball was way up there, slider, changeup - everything was outstanding. I thought he looked ready to go."

Price said his body and arm felt strong, and that it was a big step in getting to face hitters, even though they were his teammates, Ryan Roberts, Sean Rodriguez and Sam Fuld.

"Electric," Roberts said of Price. "Looks like he's ready."
