Video: Rays Myers' on fourth inning miscue: "Totally my fault."
Rookie rightfielder Wil Myers made a critical defensive mistake in the fourth inning - one of several by the Rays - allowing a David Ortiz fly ball to fall on the warning track and into the stands for a ground rule double.
The Red Sox scored five runs in the inning and won 12-2 in Game 1 of the ALDS.
Myers said he was under the ball, called CF Desmond Jennings off with a hand signal. But Myers said when he saw Jennings out of the corner of his eye, he backed off. Myers said he didn't hear anyone call it, from Jennings to the Red Sox bullpen, but acknowledged the loud crowd played a role. Myers said he should have taken charge and caught the ball.
"Totally my fault," Myers said. "I messed that up. Won't happen again."
Myers said he heard the Red Sox fans chanting "MYERS!" throughout the game. "It was loud," he said. He said he's never had that happen to him before, and it's tough, but he plans to shrug it off.
