UPDATE: Zobrist dislocates left thumb, likely headed to DL
UPDATE, 8:04: Maddon said the team would wait until Thursday before making a final decision, but Zobrist said he would be surprised if he doesn't end up on the DL given that it will probably take two weeks for his thumb to fully heal. Maddon mentioned using Sean Rodriguez and Logan Forsythe at 2B in Zobrist's absence. Also worth noting is that INF Cole Figueroa was pulled from Triple-A Durham's game in the first inning.
UPDATE, 6:15: Zobrist dislocated his left thumb on the play and will miss "some time,'' the team said.
Zobrist's thumb was put back into place, and he will remain with the team for the remainder of the road trip, with a plan to be revaluated when the team returns home after Sunday's game in Anaheim.
It was not immediately clear if the Rays would place him on the DL or make another roster move to add an infielder.
DEVELOPING: Rays 2B Ben Zobrist left today's game with an apparent left thumb injury that appeared to be quite painful.
Zobrist was sliding head first into second on steal attempt in the top of the fifth when he tried to grab the base with his left hand, and his thumb appeared to bend quite awkwardly.
Third base coach Tom Foley was attending to Zobrist even before he walked off the field, and then the Rays medical staff as well.
Sean Rodriguez replaced Zobrist at 2B.
