Florida State football player Michael Ray Garvin talks Arizona Cardinals and track

Garvin Florida State’s Michael Ray Garvin is on the move.

But then that is what he does so well.

Michael Ray Garvin, a three-time outdoor track and field all-American (in the 200 meter sprint in 2006 and as part of the 4x100 meter relay teams in 2007 and 2008, is on his way to Arizona today to participate in the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals’ minicamp. He signed with the club as a priority free agent after last weekend’s draft.

“I’m just really happy that I’m on the team, no matter how I got on it,’’ said Michael Ray Garvin, who ran the stadium and worked out as the draft rolled on last Sunday. “I can’t wait to get out there.’’

Garvin, who was second in the nation in kickoff returns as a senior at Florida State with an average of 30.09 yards and one touchdown, said the Cardinals have told him they want him as a return man and also as a receiver. That’s a position he hasn’t played since his days at Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey. He was a cornerback and kickoff returner at Florida State.

But he does have hands (two career interceptions) and speed. Lots of speed. He ran the 100 meters in 10.19 seconds at the Texas Relays in April to qualify for the NCAA regional meet May 29-30 in Greensboro, N.C. He’s also qualified in the 4x100 relay but may not be able to run there.

“That’s still a question. It’s their (the Cardinals) decision,’’ he said, adding he’d like to be there to help his teammates go for a fourth consecutive NCAA championship. “We’ll see what happens.’’
