Florida State's D'Vontrey Richardson, Jason Stidham and Jimmy Marshall talk about the baseball draft
Florida State outfielder/quarterback D'Vontrey Richardson was heading to a shopping mall back home in Leesburg, Ga., with friends when the text message came:
"Congratulations. You've been picked by the Brewers.''
Milwaukee made the multi-talented Richardson its fifth-round pick (No. 166 overall) on Wednesday, surprising the player given his limited production this past season at Florida State. He hit .304 in 46 games (22 starts). He did injure his right thumb trying to make a catch during the Miami series in early April that didn't help his playing time or his stats.
He said the fifth round was higher than he expected "because I didn’t really contribute much to the team, I didn’t really do much,'' but he believes the Brewers saw his potential after scouting him high school and during his freshman year at FSU. (He didn't play last year due to academics.)
"I was very happy about it,'' he said. "I'm not 100 percent, but I'm pretty sure (I'll sign).''
That would end his football career, something that he said hasn't hit him yet. Richardson, unhappy with how he was used last season, said earlier this year he would move to safety in the fall.
"I haven't really talked to the football coaches,'' he said. "Coach Jimbo (Fisher) sent me a text messaging saying how proud he was.''
As for the two other current Seminoles selected, junior second baseman Jason Stidham and senior pitcher Jimmy Marshall, both were like Richardson and not sitting by a computer watching the draft ticker.
Stidham was out fishing with former teammate Brandon Reichert when he got a text and then, within 30 seconds, about 10 more alerts about him going to St. Louis in the eighth round (No. 249).
"No decision’s been made yet,'' he said. "It’s going to be a really tough decision just knowing the quality and the talent of the team next year … You just know that team’s going to do well … It's got a lot ahead of them, with or without me. That all plays a factor and a big role because anybody would want to be a part of that.''
Marshall was home playing video games, Halo, "just relaxing,'' when he learned he'd been picked by the Dodgers in the 23rd round (No. 697).
"My roommate Trent Jarvis just got in,'' Marshall said. "I looked at him and said, "Dude. I just got drafted.' He was pumped. He was running around the house, high-fiving invisible people, high-fiving me.
"I think it was more of a relief than anything else, to be honest with you. These guys (Stidham and Richardson) have that option to come back next year. I didn’t have that. I was just hoping to get picked up. ... It feels good to be able to move on to the next level.''
For him that likely will be with the Dodgers' rookie ball team in Odgen, Utah; he expects to report by June 23.
