Florida State receiver Cameron Wade accepts plea deal to all but resolve legal issue
As was first reported here yesterday, Florida State receiver Cameron Wade pleaded no contest to a reduced charge, public affray, on Thursday to all but end his legal problems that began in November 2008.
Wade was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery for allegedly throwing the first punch that ignited a brawl between members of the football team and members of a fraternity. The case seemed headed for a trial (jury selection would have been Friday), but the State Attorney's Office and Wade (and his attorney, Matthew Aungst) agreed to a plea deal.
An adjudication of guilt was withheld and Wade will attend an anger management class and perform 25 hours of communtiy service -- his attorney is encouraging him to do more than 25 hours. Sentencing has been set for 60 days and if Wade completes the community service and the anger management class by then, he could avoid probation and that would mean the case would end.
"Cameron wants to get this behind him and not be a distraction for the football team,'' Aungst told the Times. "He thanked the judge and the thanked the State Attorney.... This is a good resolution for everybody.''
