10 Days of Taylor: Is anything happening in Tampa on Saturday besides Taylor Swift?
(Welcome to 10 Days of Taylor, our epic countdown to the epic finale of the most epic pop tour of all time: Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour, stopping Halloween Night at Raymond James Stadium. For all of our Taylor Swift coverage, click here.)
As we have made scrupulous note of here in the Taylor Swift Bunker, the biggest pop show of the year is coming on Saturday night. But thanks to T-Swizzle sucking up all the oxygen, tickets are still available to some popular acts coming to Tampa Bay that night — shows that likely would have sold out by now.
Taylor’s tween fans have already broken their parents' hearts by opting to leave behind the childhood glee of Halloween to spend all their babysitting money on Taylor tickets.
Here’s what else is happening on Saturday, if you're not interested in Swift's stampede through Tampa.
Chvrches: This could be a tough choice for fans of the Scottish indie-pop sensations Chvrches (pronounced “churches”) coming to Jannus Live the same night as Taylor Swift. They broke through among the indie set with their 2013 album The Bones of What You Believe, featuring the crossover hit The Mother We Share. Their new album, Every Open Eye, has the kind of slick pop, like lead single Leave a Trace, that Swift fans would love. Tickets to see Chvrches at Jannus Live are $23 at livenation.com.
Doug Loves Movies : The stoner comedian is bringing his popular podcast, Doug Love Movies, to the Tampa Improv on Saturday at the weed-friendly time of 4:20 p.m. The podcast is a cross between a conversation and a quiz show, with Benson leading his panelists in various film-themed games. While Benson doesn’t announce each episode’s guests in advance, this weekend’s Improv headliner, past DLM guest Chris Porter, is a safe bet. Tickets are $20 at improvtampa.com.
Buckwheat Zydeco: We doubt this show at Skipper’s Smokehouse has a lot of crossover with Taylor Swift fans, but the Grammy Award-winning accordionist and zydeco musician, along with his openers, the Gumbo Boogie Band, will have the audience dancing like they have Bad Blood and need to Shake it Off. Price: $15-$20.
Screaming Queens: We are crossing our fingers and wishing on a star that this Halloween-themed drag show at Hamburger Mary’s Saturday will have a Taylor Swift impersonator in a high-waisted skirt. Regardless, some of the area’s best performers including Esme Russell, Kiala Santi, Desiree Demorney, Amanda D’Rod and Jocelyn Summers will perform three shows on Saturday at 5:30, 8 and 10:30 p.m. No cover, $2 seat at Hamburger Mary’s Bar & Grille, 1600 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City.
