12 bands still in the running for Backyard BBQ slots

Mutemath

Rock music and the sweet aroma of BBQ will soon fill the air at Vinoy Park in St. Pete.

97X is prepping its third annual 97X Memorial Day Backyard BBQ on Saturday, May 23, featuring live music from The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, The Airborne Toxic Event, Mute Math (above), and Iglu & Hartly. Activities will also include Moto X (motocross) demonstrations and open volleyball tournaments.

"I am really stoked about this lineup," said 97X program director Michael Sharkey, a.k.a. Shark. "The Airborne Toxic Event, who have been praised a lot lately, will play their first show in Tampa Bay at the BBQ. Also, Alternative Press magazine just named Mute Math the one band to see before you die, so that'll be a show. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus always play well in Tampa, and that's only three of the bands."

Three local bands will also get the chance to perform. Listeners can pick by heading to the 97X site and casting your vote. The contest ends at noon Monday. And the nominees are...

50rockWhy would anyone voluntarily attempt to see 50 concerts at 50 different venues in a single summer? Jay Cridlin shrugged and thought: Eh, why not.
