Coming Saturday and Sunday to Ybor City: The second annual Homemade Music Symposium, a two-day series of free seminars for musicians on how to get their work into the hands of the public.

The symposium isn’t about lectures, said David Audet, founder and president of Artists and Writers group, which hosts the event. It’s about dialogue.

"We listened to the musicians, and we said, ‘What do you want? What do you need?’" Audet said.

For example: At last year's Sympoisum, organizers threw in a sidebar on electronic press kits (EPKs) that turned out to be really popular. So this year there's a session titled Using Your Electronic Press Kit and Website to Put More Money in Your Pocket.

You'll also get seminars on video production, online marketing, home and professional recording, photography, social networking and advice from some of the local scene's most visible movers and shakers: Brett Steele, Joe D'Acunto, Ivan Pena, Steve Connelly, Julie Garisto, Scott Harrell, Lee "Flee" Courtney and many more.

And let's not forget the music -- performances by Will Quinlan, Rebekah Pulley, Ronny Elliott (above) Dynasty, 10th Concession and more, at venues all over Ybor City. Get more details on the concerts here.

One of the featured speakers is Peter Wells, co-founder of TuneCore, a digital service that allows musicians to bypass industry gatekeepers and get their songs onto iTunes, Amazon and the like for a nomimnal fee. 

TuneCore's co-founder, Jeff Price, says digital distribution and EPKs are changing the music industry -- unlike CD shops, the Internet offers unlimited shelf space and no up-front manufacturing costs, so independent artists can post music online and still get noticed. Thus ends the need to hire a deep-pocketed label to schmooze with the gatekeepers at Wal-Mart and Best Buy.

"F--- that," Price said. "Anyone can have access to distribution now."
