Artist of the day: The Grecian Urns

Grecian.urns

Folkified pop collective the Grecian Urns -- Bryce McGuire, acoustic guitar and vocals; Brandon McGuire, electric guitar; David Norris, drums; Jared DiMaggio, bass; Laurie Beth Norris; keyboards, Katherine Dunn, fiddle; and Trevor Butts, trumpet and ukulele -- strike a warm and earnest balance between the orchestral grandeur and playful, childlike twee.

The McGuires are brothers, and the Norrises are brother and sister, and sometimes the McGuires' three sisters join them onstage with viola, cello and violin. "We like to keep it in the family," Bryce McGuire said. If the Decemberists wanted to be farmers instead of sea captains, this is the music they'd play.

On Friday, the Grecian Urns will play with Sunbears, Juicy Pony, eFFeX, Shunda K. and more at the Hot Dog Show 3 at Crowbar, 1812 N 17th St., Ybor City. Tickets are $7.
