When Andy Nunez hits the road with his indie pop quintet, the Starlight Mints, he won’t have to worry about missing his family. They’ll be right beside him.

His wife, Marian Love Nunez, is the band’s keyboardist. Their daughter, 5-year-old Penny, is, quite probably, the group’s youngest fan.

The Nunezes and bandmates Allan Vest (vocals and guitar), Javier Gonzales (bass) and Ryan Lindsey (keyboards and guitar) perform with the Evangelicals and the Tape Delay at 9 p.m. Friday at the New World Brewery in Ybor City, their first area show in years. Tickets are $8 at the door. Look for some of Nunez‚Äôs Cuban relatives in the audience; his father was born in Ybor.

The band is promoting their fourth album, Change Remains from Barsuk Records, which came out digitally June 9 and debuts in stores July 21. Nunez describes it as more “dancey’’ than previous discs.

Tbt* recently spoke with Nunez, 38, from the band’s home base in Norman, Okla., about touring with family, disappointing gigs in Tampa and the future of indie pop.

How did you come up with the name Starlight Mints?

We were eating at a restaurant and before we were about to make posters for our first show, someone just said “Starlight Mints,” and we’re like, “Okay, we’ll go with that for now.”

Did the restaurant give out Starlight Mints?

Yeah, something stupid like that. We’ve done everything we can do to avoid any kind of connection with the candy. Amazingly enough, it was back in the beginning of the Web, so we were able to dot-com the name. Nowadays it would be impossible to get that, I’m sure.
