Two Saturday shows not to miss: Morningbell and the Spam Allstars

Morningbell
Two out-of-town favorites hit Ybor Saturday night, and the locals supporting them are no slouches, either.

Both shows have danceability. One offers an all-out party and the other a creative tour de force of modern pop and rock.
At Crowbar, South Florida ensemble extraordinaire Spam Allstars heats up the night with a big pot o’ zesty hip-hop, Latin and funk. The Stars always draw a huge crowd and get the place pumping with horn-kissed jams and infectious beats.
Lighting the stove will be local ska kings Magadog, a tbt* Ultimate Local Band of 2009, and Acho Brother, a.k.a. Hector Mayoral, starts the evening with his visceral folk guitar and impassioned vocal, both in English and Spanish.
Over at New World Brewery, Gainesville’s Morningbell, above, debuts new songs from the band’s stellar new release, Sincerely, Severely. The multifaceted CD plays like a tribute to front bros’ Travis and Eric Atria’s record collection, with musical genres through the ages: folk, vintage R&B (falsetto and all) and voodoo jingle-jangle.
The eclectic approach was a risk that paid off for a band. In lesser hands, the combo could be whiplash inducing, but Morningbell’s sweet new suite has genuine flow. Credit it to the Atrias’ keen skills and sprinkles of the band’s signature sparkle pop. It all shines like a platinum necklace with precious stones in different colors – tastefully unique.
"As always, the $100 light show will be present," said Eric Atria, "and we even scheduled the weather to cool down for the evening!"
Another Tampa band featured as a tbt* Ultimate Local Band in 2008, Red Room Cinema, returns after a long hiatus to play at the Morningbell CD release show.
"This will be our first show with the new lineup," says keyboardist Doug Fender, "Dave (Teten) and Keoni (Garrido) left the band a few months back, so John Hayes from Guiltmaker started playing with us and we instantly felt like a band again. It will also be our first show in over a year."
