The best local albums of 2009: Kamran Mir on Have Gun, Will Travel

Urbane.cowboys.kamron
(This week we’re asking local musicians to pick their favorite local albums of 2009. Here, Kamran Mir of Urbane Cowboys shows some love for Have Gun, Will Travel.)

Have Gun, Will Travel, Postcards From The Friendly City
As with HGWT’s last release, Casting Shadows Tall As Giants, every time I listen to this record, I get something new out of it. At first, I was disappointed by what seemed like a dearth of up-tempo rockers, but as I let the quality of this record wash over me, I realized that this was a tribute to the strength of Matt Burke’s songwriting and HGWT’s musicianship, as much as it was a testament to my (sometimes) laziness as a listener. The dense instrumental landscape of Postcards acts as the perfect canvas for Burke’s heartfelt lyrics. Have Gun, Will Travel have put forth another stellar effort that cements their status as one of the best bands in the Tampa Bay area. Pour yourself some whiskey and enjoy.
