The best local albums of 2009: Vinnie Cosentino on Sons of Hippies
(This week we’re asking local musicians to pick their favorite local albums of 2009. Here, Vinnie Cosentino of Palantine, above, hails Sons of Hippies.)
Sons of Hippies, Warriors of the Light
Warriors of the Light by Bradenton-based Sons of Hippies is a disc that rises above conventional local music. It’s clear that the songwriting duo of Katherine Kelly and Jonas Canales is comfortable experimenting with musical techniques and instrumentation, ranging from congas to synths. However, they do so tactfully, and in the process, write guitar-driven rock songs that walk the line between pop and progressive. Fans of Sonic Youth or The Pixies will find Warriors of the Light a welcome addition to their catalog, and fans of Bay area music will find that Sons of Hippies round out a solid list of bands and add credibility to a once meandering music scene.
