Artist of the day: Silent Trio
Just as Ben Folds Five had three members, St. Petersburg’s Silent Trio is actually five musicians — Singer-guitarist Nathan Curry, saxman-bassist Jim Cooley, bassist Levi Hammock, trombonist Noel Rochford and percussionist Shawnee Davis — who play a bouncy mix of styles ranging from jam to jazz to indie.
“We generally describe ourselves as jazz-infused angry indie rock,” said Curry. “Or pseudo-latin indie blues rock. Or indie-blues variety rock. I don’t know. Something along those lines.”
On their Web site, they’ve made their 2009 debut album, Beta, and a live show Gasoline Alley available for free download — though any donations you care to toss their way would no doubt be appreciated. “We made one penny in donations," Curry said, "which PayPal charged for processing the transaction. Funny.”
Silent Trio has two shows this weekend: One at 6 p.m. Friday at the Orpheum in Ybor City (tickets are $10) alongside Aiming at Dawn, Unfold and Hangman Jury; and another Saturday at Market on 7th in Ybor City, alongside Suckerfish. Tickets are $7.

50 Concerts
Why would anyone voluntarily attempt to see 50 concerts at 50 different venues in a single summer? Jay Cridlin shrugged and thought: Eh, why not.
