Artist of the day: Phil Traynor

Phil.traynor
Smooth jazz multi-instrumentalist Phil Traynor recently released a new album, Autumn Breeze, featuring a lineup of local and national jazz talents like Stacey Knights and Chris Vadala. It's full of 12 tracks of easygoing, '70s and '80s-style

that call to mind everyone from jazz artists like Chuck Mangione and Kenny G to pop acts like Seals and Croft and Loggins and Messina.

So why aren't you likely to see Traynor promoting the disc with gigs around town?

"Why aren't I gigging?" he asks. "Well, I play the entire rhythm section on the CD -- drums, bass, keyboards, guitars -- so it's hard to put a band together from that foundation."

When he does play, it's most often with the Gulf Coast Jazz Quartet, a wedding/event/party group based in Pinellas County. He's content for his personal music to be a side studio project.

"Putting together a band full time and trying to gig isn't really practical for me," he said. "I'm a white collar nerd during the day, and my family consumes the majority of my free time beyond that, so I draw my joy from working in the studio, gigging once or twice a month with GCJQ, and picking up studio musician gigs here and there."

You can check out Traynor on YouTube, Facebook or CD Baby.
