Babyface, Bell Biv DeVoe, Maze with Frankie Beverly lead Funk Fest Tampa Bay lineup

Babyface
If you like to get down, funky and occasionally a lil' bit dirty, there's no other place you'll want to be this May 1 than Vinoy Waterfront Park in St. Petersburg.

The lineup for Funk Fest Tampa Bay, a concert blending funk, soul and hip-hop through the ages, is taking shape, and you can expect a number of hitmakers to make an appearance. For example:

-- Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, above, the uber-platinum producer/singer/songwriter, who's responsible for almost every pop or R&B hit of the '90s, including his own singles How Come, How Long and Eric Clapton's Change the World.

-- Bell Biv DeVoe, the New Edition spinoff whose unstoppable hits include Poison and Do Me!

-- The reunited SWV, a.k.a. Sisters With Voices, who sang Weak and I'm So Into You.

-- Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, an old-school soul outfit making the rounds this spring at festivals like SunFest and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. They might not have had as many hits as the other groups, but they toured with Marvin Gaye and are renowned among soul, jazz and R&B fans.

-- And of course the one and only Doug E. Fresh, human beatbox and party emcee nonpareil. It ain't a party unless Doug E. Fresh is in the building.

Organizers of the show, which is sponsored by 95.7 The Beat, promise more acts to come. (Is it too much to hope for Blackstreet?)

The event is May 1. General admission tickets start at $35-$45, with a limited number of advance tickets available for $30 through March 31. Click here to buy tickets.

50rockWhy would anyone voluntarily attempt to see 50 concerts at 50 different venues in a single summer? Jay Cridlin shrugged and thought: Eh, why not.
