Artist of the day: Cristol
With the Tampa Bay Rays gearing up for another pennant race, let's look back to 2008, when a trio of St. Petersburg rappers turned the Rays' surprising season into a jam worthy of radio airplay.
Herman "Cristol" Grant, along with Davie "Big Gill" Gill and James "Bay Boy" Peoples recorded It's Our Season early in the year, and the infectious chorus ("Let me get a handclap for the Tampa Bay Rays!") turned into a little bit of an anthem at the Trop. Check out the video here.
Cristol has pushed his career forward since then, releasing a couple of mixtapes and networking with DJs to get his music played in the clubs. This year he's been promoting his new single, Smack It Up, and pushing the high-living Pinellas lifestyle he flaunts in his (semi-NSFW) video for Swagg So Mean. "I'm in the club, on Henny in my St. Pete city," he raps.
