Tonight in Ybor City: Free drinks and chic beats for Pulp the Party's third anniversary at Czar

Paul Geller wasn’t sure what to expect when Pulp the Party, his weekly DJ night at Czar in Ybor City, switched from Fridays to Wednesdays.

“I had my doubts about moving it to Wednesday,” said Geller, a.k.a. DJ Pauly Crush, who’s based in Orlando, “but I knew that it would end up making the relationship with the club and the relationship with the patrons even stronger.”

And so it is. The crowds may be a little smaller, but Pulp the Party is still going strong. Tonight at Czar, Geller and his slate of indie-friendly DJs — Justin Scott, E. StrangeFeelya and Tampa’s own Crate Brothers — will celebrate Pulp’s third anniversary with free drinks and the same underground, subculture (okay ... “hipster”) music they’ve become known for.

“It’s about blowing off steam and not having to pop your collars or putting on a jacket,” Geller said. “We take pride in delivering music that isn’t being played at other clubs yet, or maybe ever will — certainly not on the radio. ... If you can keep the dance floor going on songs that people don’t really know, you know you’re doing a good job.”

Tonight, the doors open at 9 p.m., with a three-hour open bar until midnight. And don’t forget the free Stella keg and free and discounted vodka drinks all night. There’s a $5 cover after 11 p.m.; as always, RSVP at pulptheparty.com to get on the guest list.

And be sure to congratulate the DJs on three years well done.

“I would not have spent my time and my sweat if I didn’t think that it was going to pay off,” Geller said. “Tampa’s been absolutely insanely supportive and responsive. I’m happy to be in a community that’s doing a lot of stuff like this now. I think there are a lot of other nights out there that are doing really good stuff, I’m happy to still be pushing that envelope. As long as people keep coming, so will I.”
