Bonnaroo 2014 lineup: Vampire Weekend, Avett Brothers, Flaming Lips, Lionel Richie among artists coming to Tampa Bay
Every year, we here at SoundcheckCorp. pay close attention to the lineup for the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn.
Partly it's because it's one of the few major global music festivals within driving distance of the Sunshine State (in fact, Soundcheck has attended and covered Bonnaroo live in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013). But mainly it's because so many huge acts end up passing through Tampa Bay on their way to or from The Farm.
This year is no exception. Quite a number of artists on this year's Bonnaroo lineup card already have concerts booked in town, and you can bet more will be added before or after this year's festival, which is slated for June 12-15.
Here's a rundown of some Bonnaroo 2014 performers with concerts scheduled in Tampa Bay:
-- Headliners Kanye West, Jack White and Elton John aren't coming here, but one of the biggest names at the fest is Vampire Weekend, above, who are co-headlining Tampa's inaugural Big Guava Festival, May 2-4 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Other Big Guava acts who are also playing Bonnaroo include Cake, Slightly Stoopid, Grouplove, Chance the Rapper, ZZ Ward and MS MR. Click here.
-- The Gasparilla Music Festival, March 8-9 at Curtis Hixon Park, will also represent at Bonnaroo 2014. Headliners Flaming Lips will be there, as will Those Darlins and J. Roddy Walston and the Business. Click here.
-- Like Vampire Weekend, Lionel Richie is one of the top five names on Bonnaroo's poster, and he'll be at the MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre on July 14. Click here.
-- The Avett Brothers are the first name on the poster's second line, and they'll be at the USF Sun Dome on March 29. Click here.
-- Rapper Wiz Khalifa will headline Wild 94.1's Wild Splash on March 8 at Coachman Park in Clearwater. Click here.
-- In terms of sheer immediacy, New York fuzz-metal outfit Caveman will be at the Orpheum in Ybor City this Thursday. Click here.
-- A couple of Bonnaroo artists don't have headlining shows coming up in Tampa Bay, but they will be opening for bigger acts: Rapper Pusha T (opening for 2 Chainz on March 17 at Jannus Live; click here), and pop duo Capital Cities (opening for Katy Perry on June 30 at the Tampa Bay Times Forum; click here).
-- Cloud Nothings will be at Crowbar in Ybor City on April 22. Click here.
-- Big Sam's Funky Nation will play the Tampa Bay Blues Festival on April 13. Click here.
Expect more concerts by Bonnaroo-bound artists to pop up on the Tampa Bay concert calendar by mid-June. In the meantime, here's the full Bonnaroo 2014 lineup. Who would you like to see book a show in Tampa Bay? Off the top of our head, we're crossing our fingers for Jack White, Phoenix, Damon Albarn, James Blake, Ben Howard, Warpaint and Broken Bells. For now, though Lionel Richie is a pretty good start.
