Review: Harry Potter fans unite for Harry and the Potters at Transitions Art Gallery in Tampa

harry.and_.the_.potters2.jpg

In a recent episode of ESPN’s The B.S. Report, pop culture journalist Chris Connelly called the phenomenon of Harry Potter “the Beatles for the twentysomething generation.”

He’s right, if you think about it. Few things in history have had as seismic an impact on pop culture as the Beatles, but Harry Potter is one of those things. The books transmogrified literature. The movies attracted even more fans. So huge has Harry become that an entire genre of bookish, fan-fiction-style music, dubbed “wizard rock,” spawned in his honor.

The most famous wizard rock group? Harry and the Potters, a Massachusetts brother-brother duo who dress, and act, exactly like Harry Potter (minus the actual magic, of course).

With Florida exploding in a fit of Harry Potter mania this week – what with LeakyCon at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 on Friday – Harry and the Potters paid a visit to Tampa Bay Tuesday, performing at a library in Clearwater in the afternoon, and Transitions Art Gallery at the Skatepark of Tampa that night.

And so, as Deathly Hallows reviews begin trickling out, it’s worth asking: With the Harry Potter franchise coming to an end, can the novelty of wizard rock be far behind?

Short answer: Not if Harry and the Potters have anything to say about it. ... Read more

Talking hip-hop beefs with Diddy tell-all author Mark Curry, who's in Tampa Monday

Mark-curry

As an artist signed to Bad Boy Records, Mark Curry rapped on songs with the Notorious B.I.G., appeared in big budget music videos and rubbed shoulders with hip hop’s elite.

His ultimate goal: A chance to write and debut his own album.

But when a combination of bad business agreements with label owner Sean “Diddy” Combs and personal choices got in the way of that, he turned to a different type of writing.

The result was Dancing with the Devil: How Puff Burned the Bad Boys of Hip Hop.

In the explosive cautionary tell-all, Curry, 39, delves into the hip hop beef that ultimately resulted in the deaths of rappers Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. and portrays Combs -- one of the most powerful people in hip hop -- as an economic opportunist with little interest in helping his artist get ahead.

Curry is in town Monday to talk about his book at the University of South Florida’s Tampa campus. He'll speak in Room 3709 of the Marshall Student Center at 8:30 p.m.

Last week, tbt* caught up with him for a short interview.

When you first signed to Bad Boy, where did you see your music career going?

All the way to the top as an entertainer and rapper. I saw me being able to feed my family, pay my bills on time and all kinds of good stuff. But that’s not what happened.

You make a lot of allegations against Puff in the book. Has there been much backlash against you from his camp?

One thing about the truth is that it can’t be denied. Nobody’s coming after me, but Puffy did draw a line between me and my friends like (producer) Dallas Austin. It’s like they’re afraid to speak to me now because it’s like speaking to me would ruin their relationship with Puff. ... Read more

November Foxtrot Whiskey's guide to literature

Novemberfoxtrotwhiskey

We asked Aaron Lepley (above right) of Tampa garage-rockers November Foxtrot Whiskey to recommend a few good books to pass the time this summer. Here's what he had to say.

More often than not, we find ourselves in situations where we’d rather be somewhere else: waiting for an oil change, a mechanic to finish working on your car, waiting in line at the bank, or in a doctor’s office. I’ve found that reading in these situations makes time well wasted time well spent.

Here's a short list of books I‚Äôve found helpful to pass the time.

Night Shift by Stephen King: Stephen King was the author who first got me excited about reading. He fell to the wayside as I became interested in the Beats et al. I picked up him up again last October and haven‚Äôt put him down since.  The man can write. Period.

Love is a Dog From Hell, Charles Bukowski: This was the first book of his I read, and was also what perked my interests in poetry.  I would not be who I am today if it wasn‚Äôt for this book. Thanks Hank.

Pickup on Noon Street, Raymond Chandler: Chandler defines the private eye fiction genre. "Chandleresque" is an adjective used to describe the gritty L.A. underground of the '30s he depicts in his work. He is a master of the street language of his era. Every story has kept me on the edge of my seat.

On Love and Barley, Basho: I find reading and writing Haiku very relaxing. Basho is the best, hands down.
