Following car accident, Gary Sinise cancels April 20 concert at Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg
Via our pals at The Juice* comes news that actor Gary Sinise was injured in a car accident last Friday. Sinise "was not seriously hurt," according to his website, but the accident has forced the cancellation of several concerts by Sinise and his pop-rock cover group the Lt. Dan Band, including an April 20 gig at Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg.
Sinise was to be one of the star attractions at this year's Sunscreen Film Festival, April 19-22. Festival organizers are eyeing potential replacements for Sinise, and add on their website, "We are working on rescheduling Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band for a date sometime in the future."

Wilson Phillips' Chynna Phillips talks 'Bridesmaids,' hairstyles and covering her famous father's hits
Who can forget Wilson Phillips' epic 1990 video for Hold On, with Chynna Phillips and bandmates Wendy and Carnie Wilson marching down a boardwalk in black power suits? Some day somebody’s gonna make you want to turn around and say goodbye.
The song has risen to sacred pop culture status, sprouting up in comedies like 2004’s Harold and Kumar go to White Castle and 2009’s Spring Breakdown. And in 2011, it had a prominent role in the smash hit Bridesmaids.
“We knew nothing about the story line or who was starring in it,” Phillips said recently by phone. “All we knew was that it was a comedy and they wanted to use Hold On and they were hoping and praying we would agree to be in the movie. We agreed to do it sort of blindly. We showed up on set and saw Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig and we started to put the pieces together. ... We were up until 4 a.m. just singing the song over and over and over again. We just loved it.”
Wilson Phillips -- now preparing an album of cover songs by their famous fathers, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson and the Mamas and the Papas' John Phillips -- will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St. in Clearwater. Tickets are $49-$79. Click here for details.

Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez spotted hanging around St. Petersburg
And the Selena Gomez spottings keep pouring in. Over the weekend, Gomez, who's in town shooting the film Spring Breakers, was spotted hanging around St. Petersburg with her boyfriend Justin Bieber, according to various reports. The couple dined at Ferg's, according to owner Mark Ferguson, and were reportedly spotted at the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel and Gratzzi Italian Grille, not to mention boarding a fishing boat with Bieber's grandparents. (This report says they're booked at the $18,000-a-night presidential suite, which sounds mighty fishy, but hey, so are a lot of things in the gossip world.)
"great day fishing. time with grandpa doing the simple things in life. great day," Bieber tweeted on Sunday.
Click here for our report. In the meantime, if any of you guys spot them hanging out at Daddy Kool Records or the Ale and the Witch, you know what to do. ... Read more
Jay Mohr talks podcasting, technology and 'Saturday Night Live'
If Jay Mohr told you that his podcast, Mohr Stories, is his favorite thing he’s ever done — more than Saturday Night Live, more than Jerry Maguire, more than his two books — you’d probably call him a liar. He knows that, even if he doesn’t understand it.
“There’s always a new wrinkle to negativity,” he said. “Out of all the things I could like about — I would lie on a credit report or something. I would be taller on my driver’s license. It doesn’t behoove me to go, 'Guess what? I’m lying about what I like!’”
Maybe it’s just that Mohr has always been that good at playing cocky and disingenuous. Even today, he says, “I get a lot of tweets from people: 'I’ve always hated you since Jerry Maguire,’” where he played the sleazy agent who fires Tom Cruise at lunch. “Do you hate Glenn Close because of the movie with Michael Douglas? Are you like, 'Glenn Close is crazy?’”
Mohr is 41, but he’s been in the public eye more than half his life. He started doing stand-up as a teen and had his first televised gig, on MTV, at 20. By 22, he was on Saturday Night Live — an experience he turned into the backstage memoir Gasping For Airtime. Movies and other TV shows have followed, but through it all, Mohr has stuck to his first love: Stand-up comedy. His prodigious gift of gab led him to start Mohr Stories, a 90-minute show on Kevin Smith’s Smodcast Network, that he says has led fans to see him in a new light.
As Mohr comes to the Mahaffey Theater for a stand-up show on March 15 (tickets are $35-$75; click here), he called us to talk about comedy, technology and Saturday Night Live.
Do you feel more comfortable in a theater than a club, or the other way around?
I feel comfortable in different ways. I love the intimacy of a club; however, I love the immediacy of a theater. It’s a one-off. You have one shot to make everyone as happy as possible. There’s no second show. There’s no going back to the hotel room and looking at your notes and realizing what you could change for the next time.
I’ve heard that it can throw off your timing, because the applause breaks are different, reaction times are a little bit different, you have to animate a little bit more to get people in the back row to see you. Have you found that to be the case at all?
I actually have not. But if applause throws off your timing, then you’re not the kind of comedian I would like to see. All you have to do is stand there and take it. ... Read more
Selena Gomez has officially been spotted in St. Petersburg
Let the celebrity-spotting begin!
Last year, musicians Harry Connick Jr. and Kris Kristofferson were in town during the filming of Dolphin Tale in and around Clearwater. This year, the big musician living in Tampa Bay is pop singer Selena Gomez, one of the stars of the indie movie Spring Breakers, which starts filming in and around St. Pete and Sarasota next week. She's joined by kinda-sorta musical figures Vanessa Hudgens (star of High School Musical) and Heather Morris (star of Glee), plus James Franco, who always seems liable to bust out with an album of folktronica/hip-hop/gypsycore/trance music at any given moment.
On Wednesday, Gomez was spotted at a Walgreen's at 66th Street and Central Avenue by 16-year-old Talio Mirisha, who snapped the photo above and had Gomez sign a get-well card for his girlfriend. We consider this the first paparazzi photo of the Spring Breakers frenzy.
Starting now, we invite you to share with us any encounters you may have with the stars of the film. Send your photos to soundcheck@tampabay.com. Even if they're not music related, we may collect them as proof that a movie this weird actually happened here. Hey, we gotta do SOMETHING to pass the time until the premiere of Magic Mike.

Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band to perform free show at Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg
Kevin Costner and Modern West have performed in Tampa Bay. So have Jim Belushi and the Sacred Hearts. Gary Sinise must have seen those shows and thought: Why not me?
So on April 20, Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform a free concert at Williams Park in downtown St. Petersburg as part of the seventh annual Sunscreen Film Festival, held April 19-22 in and around downtown St. Pete.
Named, obviously, for for the actor's Oscar-nominated role in Forrest Gump, the Lt. Dan Band performs covers of classic rock and funk tunes as well as modern hits by acts as diverse as Kelly Clarkson, Zac Brown Band, Evanescence and Beyonce. (Oh, to hear Gary Sinise sing Single Ladies...) The group regularly plays benefits for active duty military, and recently performed for troops in Kuwait. They're also the subject of a documentary, Lt. Dan Band: For The Common Good.
Though the concert is free -- and will also feature an appearance by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers cheerleaders -- you can purchase VIP tickets which include front-row access plus admission to an after party at Push Ultra Lounge. For info on those tickets, click here.
No other celebrity guests have been announced for this year's Sunscreen Film Fest, but a few usually show up. Click here for all the details on the festival.
Reminder: Tampa's own Channing Tatum hosts 'Saturday Night Live' this weekend
This has nothing to do with music (unless you count the appearance by our old pals Bon Iver), but it still bears mentioning: Former Tampa resident Channing Tatum is hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend.
Tatum is an Alabama native, but he spent his teenage years in Tampa and graduated from Tampa Catholic High School, as you can see from the Class of '98 yearbook photo at right. And, of course, he famously worked as a male exotic dancer in the Strip Club Capital of the South -- an experience that he has since turned into the movie Magic Mike, which filmed in and around Tampa Bay last summer with director Steven Soderbergh and costars Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn and Joe Manganiello.
Tatum is currently promoting two movies, Haywire and The Vow, but you'll see him in pretty much every other movie that comes out this year, including 21 Jump Street, G.I. Joe: Retaliation and, of course, everyone's most anticipated movie of the year, Magic Mike.
Regardless of his cinematic output, it's still noteworthy that someone from Tampa is hosting Saturday Night Live. But LEST WE FORGET, this isn't the first time it's happened. In 1981, Chamberlain High School graduate Lauren Hutton hosted with musical guest Rick James. Sarasota's Paul Reubens, a.k.a. Pee-Wee Herman, hosted in 1985.
And then on March 30, 1985, Tampa's favorite son, Hulk Hogan, co-hosted SNL with Mr. T. This absolutely happened. Want proof? We've got their monologue after the jump.

Kevin James coming to the Straz Center in Tampa
One of the things you see before you is coming to the Straz Center in Tampa. Sadly, it is not the porcupine. (Nothing against Kevin James; we just really like porcupines.)
Kevin James will perform stand-up (remember when he did that?) at the Straz Center on April 12 (the same night as Van Halen in Tampa). Tickets start at $39.50, and they go onsale at noon Feb. 6. Our pals at Things To Do have the scoop. ... Read more
Kevin Costner and Modern West coming to the Youkey Theatre in Lakeland
Think back to 2007. The "Facebook vs. MySpace" debate still had legs. The world fell in love with a demure young girl-next-door named Amy Winehouse. The 2012 presidential race was just getting started. And the Tampa Bay Devil Rays were still the doormats of the American League.
But that last part was about to change. To help celebrate their transition from "Devil Rays" to "Rays," the team called upon actor Kevin Costner and his country-rock band, Modern West, to record a rah-rah anthem called It's All Up To You. It sounded, in the words of music critic Sean Daly, "a little like a drunk Stones tribute band soundtracking Smokey and the Bandit 2." That's a good thing, right?
We have no idea if It's All Up To You is still an integral part of Costner and Modern West's setlist. But perhaps we'll find out now that the Oscar-winning actor has booked a long-awaited return engagement in the Bay area.
Kevin Costner and Modern West will perform March 28 at the Lakeland Center's Youkey Theatre in Lakeland, according to Ticketmaster. Tickets are $35-$123, and they go onsale Friday (1/20). Click here to get them. And click here for more info on the show.

Artist of the day: Rahim Samad
As a rapper, Rahim Samad has a '90s-throwback flow that bridges the gap between the gangsta swagger of Dr. Dre and the jazzy funk of Digable Planets. He’s also a skilled writer with plenty of charisma, which is how he ended up writing and starring in an independent movie recently filmed in and around Tampa.
Helmed by local music video director Jeff Osborne, Travel Properly is sort of a triptych, a three-part story of two down-on-their-luck men who help a third man, then receive an unexpected repayment down the line. Tampa rapper Funkghost also stars in the film. This isn’t the first time Osborne and Samad have collaborated — check out their video for Samad’s On The Corner, above. ... Read more

50 Concerts
Why would anyone voluntarily attempt to see 50 concerts at 50 different venues in a single summer? Jay Cridlin shrugged and thought: Eh, why not.
