South By Southwest recap: Tampa Bay bands shine in Austin's spotlight

sleepyvikings.jpg

The Tampa Bay music scene was well represented in Austin, Texas over the weekend at South by Southwest, the massive annual conference that hosted thousands of bands (2,500 or so with official showcases, and countless others with unofficial gigs) from across the globe.

Around 10 acts from Tampa, St. Pete, Largo, Spring Hill and Clearwater took to stages, parking lots, patios, street corners, bars and just about any other spot they could find to perform rock, hip-hop, folk and pop-punk for both event patrons and passersby.

And they were in some pretty fine company. Big names like Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Jack White, Kanye West and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello also performed at SXSW.

On average, local acts drove more than 18 hours with vehicles stuffed full of gear, merch and other marketing materials to play the city that touts itself as the "live music capital of the world" and proudly urges its community to "keep Austin weird."

When you take into account fuel costs (a Bay area band can easily rack up $600 in gas towing trailers, etc.) food and lodging expenses, and the constant scheduling and organizational headaches, doing SXSW in Austin ain't cheap, and it ain't easy.

So what makes it all worth it? ... Read more

Review: Lights brings warmth from Canada to the State Theatre in St. Petersburg

lights2.jpg

Leave it to ever-smiling 24-year-old Valerie Poxleitner to turn an album titled Siberia into a joyfully danceable, sunlit adventure. That's exactly how it played out Friday night when Poxleitner, commonly and legally known as Lights (eat your heart out, Chad Ochocinco), debuted tracks off her latest disc and more to a glowing St. Pete crowd.

Siberia, currently nominated for a Juno Award (a.k.a. Canadian Grammy) in the "Pop Album of the Year" category, is for the most part, heavier than Lights' previous efforts, with its dubstep-like breakdowns, pulsing beats and snowy imagery.

But when the skinny, soft-spoken singer/guitarist/keyboardist unveiled the tunes at State Theatre (her first appearance at the venue since 2008, when she performed with Lakeland's beloved and now defunct Copeland), the vibe never turned cold or dark.

On the powerhouse anthem Flux and Flow, Lights went bigger and harder with throbbing keys, strobe lighting, and an arena-worthy belt ... not without words of encouragement, though. Through the ups and downs in life (the "flux and flows"), Lights urged us to adjust our plans and keep moving. ... Read more

Review: Flo Rida finishes strong at the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in St. Petersburg

flo.rida5_.jpg

The temperature was low, low, low, low. We all could have used some of those boots with the fur.

But in the end, there were nothing but good feelings in North Straub Park in St. Petersburg on Sunday as Flo Rida welcomed home some 8,000 runners in the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll St. Pete Half Marathon.

Performing with an indefatigable energy befitting his surroundings, the Carol City hip-popper welcomed fans onstage, worked up a marathon-quality sweat, surfed through the crowd, delivered No. 1 after No. 1 hit and gave away the shirt off his back, the shoes off his feet and much, much more. Only a performer as jacked up as Flo Rida could perform at a road race and end up handing out more free swag than race organizers.

But oh, holy heck: That cold. It was brutal. ... Read more

Photos: Zola Jesus darkens Crowbar for an enchanting evening in Ybor City

zola.jesus3_.jpg

In an music world obsessed with Lanas and Lykkes, Fionas and Florences, it's odd that Zola Jesus seems to have slipped through the cracks. She's a darling of the indie goth-pop scene, and as you might expect, her live show is just as darkly fascinating as her.

When Zola took the stage Monday night at Crowbar, the venue was almost completely dark, save for a very dim blue square in the center of the stage. People were warned not to use flashes, and some people who did were threatened with removal from the venue.

Tbt*'s Andrew Carlton was in the house to capture some ghostly images of Zola Jesus. See more after the jump. ... Read more

Photos: Dia Frampton brings her 'Voice' (and sister Meg) to the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater

dia.frampton4.jpg

It must be strange for fans of alternapop duo Meg & Dia to see what has become of Dia Frampton. Once, she was the singer of a pretty well-received, if not hugely famous, alternapop duo that played the Warped Tour. But then Dia had to go and finish second on the first season of NBC's The Voice, and now the music biz is all about Dia Framps.

So when Frampton came to the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater Sunday night, it was no doubt heartening for Meg & Dia fans to see big sister Meg on guitar, even if Dia was now the main star of the show. She called one of the 225 audience members in the crowd up onstage for a serenade, and said the band learned Creedence Clearwater Revival's Proud Mary simply so they could play it in Clearwater.

After the jump, check out some of Kevin Tighe's photos of Dia Frampton and her opening act, Andrew Allen. ... Read more

Deluna Fest Day 1 review: Weezer, Matt and Kim, Trombone Shorty light up Pensacola Beach

weezer3.jpg

In front of the main stage at the 2011 DeLuna Fest is a chasm of a pit filled with VIPs and media, separating the band from most of the audience by a good 30 feet.

It took Rivers Cuomo all of two songs to bridge the divide.

The Weezer frontman hopped from the stage early in his band’s headlining set on Day 1 of the DeLuna music festival in Pensacola Beach, then climbed not one but two barricades, high-fiving fans all the way, and clambered to the top of a sandy dune to give many fans the best view they’d had all day.

And why not? The opening day of DeLuna Fest was blessed with good vibes all day – easygoing crowds, relaxed and accessible performers and spectacularly cloudless weather on the Gulf of Mexico’s northern rim. If you were bummed about the last-minute loss of Sunday headliner Linkin Park, Friday’s festivities likely went a long way toward easing your pain. ... Read more

Review / photos: Otep leads a female-fronted metal revival at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg

otep1.jpg

Saturday was a gloomy day with scattered showers. This must have been nature’s way of foreshadowing the Otep show that evening at The State Theatre.

The lineup was lengthy, including Dark Summer, One Eyed Doll, Sister Sin, Destrophy, Blackguard, and finally Otep, above. And while musically speaking, the show was full of content, the crowd’s response included scattered showers of applause, jeers, and “next please” for a few of these acts.

An interesting note to this show was the involvement of powerful female talent, which showed that women can metal out just as much as men. And while I do not have the room in this review to go through every act that played, I must mention some of the bands that really stood out, and could have headlined their own show. ... Read more

Review / photos: Flo Rida, DJ Jazzy Jeff bring the party to the Venue in Clearwater

florida_venue_450.jpg

The Venue in Clearwater had a big weekend, bringing in DJ Jazzy Jeff and Flo Rida (above) on back-to-back days.

DJ Jazzy Jeff performed on Friday to a nearly sold-out crowd. The Venue tweeted that they were at 2500-plus in attendance, not nearly as packed as DJ Pauly D in my opinion, but still very packed. I would say there were about 100 more people for DJ Pauly D when he came a few months ago.

Nevertheless, DJ Jazzy Jeff had the crowd rockin to his '90s throwback set. Unlike many other performers I have photographed, DJ Jazzy Jeff appeared on stage at the time he was supposed to go on, which was 1 a.m. He came along with rapper Skillz, who was sort of the MC of the show and kept the crowd dancing while Jazzy Jeff remained behind the turntables. Skillz is famous for his year-end wrap-up songs about the year's news in the hip-hop world. ... Read more

Review / photos: Nelly packs 'em in at Shephard's Beach Resort in Clearwater Beach

nelly_508.jpg

In all my years of covering concerts and events at Shephard's, I have never seen them pull out an extended stage like they did for Nelly. I was told they added about eight feet of stage to their existing stage to accommodate Nelly and the St. Lunatics. ... Read more

Review / photos: Clutch, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster stir up fightin' feelings at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg

clutch3.jpg

My ears are ringing. My neck is sore. My wallet is empty.

This could happen at many concerts in the Tampa area, but the Clutch show on Wednesday at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg just seemed to go on forever, and the love/hate mentality from this concert was truly an experience.

I’m not complaining. It was well worth the aches. And while I know many are feeling much more beat up then I (more on that shortly), I was surprised by a few items about this show in general. ... Read more
