Review: Jane's Addiction bring sweaty, sexy spectacle to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater

janes.addiction6.jpg

Seminal alt-rock heroes Jane's Addiction came to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater Saturday night, and a sold-out crowd of 2,180 was there to greet them. Sean Daly was among them, and he writes:

If you’ve always bought what Jane’s has sold since its late-’80s, early-’90s heyday — especially seminal alt-rock albums Nothing’s Shocking and Ritual de lo Habitual — the near-two-hour gig was out-of-this-world, a David Lynchian haymaker on the senses. (By the way, it should be noted that one of the dancing S&M strippers was Etty Lau Farrell aka Perry’s limber wife.)

If the whole thing seemed like a clock-watching slog after the fourth song of the set, the relatively straight-forward slam-dancer Been Caught Stealing, well, you were in for a long haul. Cuts from 2011 LP The Great Escape Artist were even curiouser than the other stuff.

Photos: Tropical Heatwave 2012 brings funk, soul, alternative and much more to Ybor City

wooly.bushmen.jpg

Some of us couldn't resist the allure of Chris Cornell at the Tampa Theatre, many of Tampa Bay's most ardent music fans were out in full force at Tropical Heatwave 2012, which spread more than 70 bands across 13 venues all over Ybor City.

WMNF's annual indie/funk/jam/folk/country/alternative music bacchanal took place Saturday at the Cuban Club, the Ritz Ybor, Crowbar and just about every other place with electricity in Ybor. (We heard varying reports about the crowd at this year's Heatwave -- some said it was less-than-impressive; others said some venues, like Crowbar, were packed. What would you say, dear readers?)

Photographer Andrew Carlton was on hand to snap shots of acts like the Wooly Bushmen (above), Black Taxi, Boom Chick, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, He's My Brother She's My Sister, the Revelations featuring Tre Williams and more. "Just about every show I saw was great," he writes, "from the Garbage-Men (kids using musical instruments made out of toys and cereal boxes), to Black Taxi, which killed it at The Ritz."

Review / photos: Nasty Savage say farewell alongside metal legends at Crowbar in Ybor City

nasty.savage1.jpg

As the saying goes, all things must come to an end. Saturday was the evening that hometown favorites Nasty Savage played their last show ever. Crowbar in Ybor City packed in a standing-room-only crowd of longtime Tampa metalheads who were there not only to see one last performance, but to wish their longtime friends farewell.

Nasty Savage trace their routes back more than 30 years in Tampa, to the old Sunset Club and beyond. You probably know that Tampa was once the death metal capital of the world, and Nasty Savage was a key ingredient in forming that great reputation. In the crowd for their last show were members of many national and local acts: Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse, Pete Sandoval of Morbid Angel, and all members of Obituary were present, among many others. ... Review / photos: Mighty Mighty Bosstones suit up, bring the ska to the Ritz Ybor in Tampa

bosstones1.jpg

Maybe I am naive. Maybe I am just too much into the music to care. But for some reason, as soon as I heard someone say the following phrase, I realized this concert would be reminiscent of a sporting event.

“I can’t believe I’m eating at a joint called New York New York, and going to see the Bosstones. How sacrilegious.”

I turned around and there was a beefy dude wearing his flat cap and standard Boston baseball jersey, swigging a beer and firmly holding a slice of pizza hostage.

I knew the Mighty Mighty Bosstones were from Boston, and I have mad respect for the music that has originated from that area and the influence it’s had on the music world. But come on, people of Boston, this wasn’t a baseball game! As I walked into the Ritz Ybor on Friday, I surely saw folks of all ages, genders and beer gut sizes. ... Read more

Revew / photos: Rammstein reign in fire, theatricality at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa

rammmstein3.jpg

As industrial enthusiasts are well aware, Rammstein was in Tampa Saturday night to kick off their North American part of their "Made In Germany" tour, and the Tampa Bay Times Forum was happy to be their host.

Anyone that is familiar with Rammstein's live performances knows they are known for pyrotechnics, and it's a show that would make Kiss nervous. Tickets should have been sold with a warning sign reading, "No hairspray allowed." And while I am struggling to get my Doberman Pinscher insured, somehow these guys have enough liability coverage to produce a show like World War III in front of a few thousand onlookers. Go figure.

From the start of the show, Rammstein didn't disappoint. Flames were thrown 30 feet above the stage, and it just got better from there. Vocalist Till Lindemann took the stage with six microphones strapped to his chest like a soldier wearing grenades into battle, and a battlefield-like show is what we received. Missile-like objects were zinging over the crowd; flames shooting from any available orifice on stage. Even microphone stands were victim to flame. And with stage show antics throughout the night that GWAR would aprove of, (including slaves on chains, soaking the crowd with foam and blood-like matter), no one on the floor was safe from a good dousing. ... Review / photos: Shawn Mullins strums a few lullabies at the Don CeSar Beach Resort in St. Pete Beach

shawn.mullins3.jpg

Against a curtain of sea grapes, folk rocker Shawn Mullins ’s music flowed through an intimate crowd Saturday night at the Sunsets Pavilion at the Loews Don CeSar in St. Pete Beach, past the palm trees and over the sea oats right out into the Gulf of Mexico. How appropriate, then, that his first song was named after the body of water that served as a backdrop for his show.

“I wrote this on the line of Florida and Alabama in the Flori-Bama bar parking lot 14 years ago,” Mullins said before launching into his first number with his lead guitarist Patrick Blanchard.

She thinks she might have loved him once but that was long ago / and the rain pours down like a holy waterfall over the Gulf of Mexico.

Most people know Shawn Mullins for the ubiquitous 1998 hit song Lullaby, the one many think is titled Rockabye since that’s the main repeated hooky word in the song.

Everything’s gonna be all right, rockabye, rockabye…

Among those who recognized the song were Matt and Kirsten Kern, who met around the time the song was a hit. On Saturday, they lounged on comfy blue cushions with a view of the Gulf of Mexico, the sky above punctuated by Venus, Orion, and the Big Dipper. On their anniversary vacation from Asheville, N.C., they were catching the free soundwaves that bounced off the pink stucco and over the sand.

Mullins’s music works best when the audience knows more of his work and can sing along to more than the chorus of Lullaby, as is the case when he plays in his native Georgia. Even with a crowd like this one, which was less familiar with his music, his approachable style wins over the fans. In a black T-shirt, worn jeans and boots and friendly smile, he seems like the kind of guy you want to take along on a road trip. ... Read more
